Curtain Buyer’s Guide

Choose curtains that suit your home

Choosing custom curtains starts with how you use each room. This guide helps you compare light control, privacy, fabric and curtain styles before your free in-home measure and quote with BCS Shades & Shutters.

Our mobile showroom brings samples to your home across the Central Coast, Sydney’s Upper North Shore, Newcastle and surrounding suburbs. Beau personally helps with advice, measuring and installation.

1. Sheer, blockout or both?

Sheer curtains soften daylight and give a room a light, relaxed finish. Privacy depends on the fabric and lighting, so sheers alone may not provide privacy after dark when the lights are on inside.

Blockout curtains suit rooms where stronger light control and privacy matter, such as bedrooms. The fabric blocks light, but the finished result also depends on the track position and gaps around the curtain. A double track lets you combine sheers and blockout curtains, using each layer as needed.

2. Choose your curtain heading

S Wave or S-fold curtains create an even wave along the track for a clean, contemporary look. Pinch pleat curtains have a more tailored, structured finish. Pencil pleat curtains create smaller, gathered folds.

The heading affects how the curtain hangs and how much space it takes up when open. During your appointment, we can discuss which option suits your windows, furniture and preferred look.

3. Compare fabrics in your own room

A fabric can look different beside your wall colour or in changing daylight. Compare samples in the room where the curtains will be installed, considering colour, texture, transparency and care requirements.

Our fabric range includes Nettex, Warwick, Hoad and more. Let Beau know whether you prefer a soft neutral, a textured finish or a stronger feature colour, and whether you are coordinating with existing blinds.

4. Think about tracks and everyday use

Consider ceiling or wall mounting, which side the curtains should open towards, and the space available beside the window. Doors, handles, air conditioning and nearby furniture can affect the best arrangement.

Manual and motorised options are available. If you are interested in motorisation, discuss power requirements, controls and compatibility before ordering so the proposed system suits your home.

5. What affects the price?

Custom curtain pricing depends on window dimensions, fabric selection, fullness, lining, heading style, tracks, motorisation and installation requirements. A whole-home project will also differ from a single-room update.

Share your priorities and approximate budget at the appointment. We can discuss suitable options and quote for the agreed scope. Ask what is included, how the curtains will operate, and the current production and installation timing before approving your order.

6. Prepare for your free measure and quote

Have a think about which rooms you want to update, your privacy and light-control needs, and any deadline you are working towards. Inspiration photos are welcome. You do not need to choose every detail before we visit.

Beau will bring samples, discuss options and measure your windows. You can then review the quote and confirm the specifications before placing an order. Installation is arranged as part of your project.
